As a facility 'partner' in every sense of the word, Service Systems Associates and K-M Concessions are committed to providing the capital that is necessary to build or improve upon visitor service locations. The design and operating flow of a concession location, gift shop, stroller building, or kitchen can play a major impact in creating efficiencies and maximizing returns to the host facility.

We are continually working with Zoo facilities across the country on the development of new visitor service facilities, and efficient renovation of existing facilities. We have an excellent record of bringing to completion a variety of themed concession and retail facilities.

In addition to the programming of completely new facilities, we also pride ourselves on unique, cost effective methods of re-designing and retro-fitting existing structures and turning them into successful operations, with customer service being the focal point. We have designed, built, and refurbished facilities large and small at over a dozen zoos in the U.S. The emphasis on all of these structures has been efficient visitor service, and thematic design that flows into the natural experience along visitor pathways.

Service Systems Associates recently renovated the Safari Plaza facility at the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium. The Safari Grille restaurant and other facilities in the Plaza are an excellent example of an exterior theme that blends perfectly with its surroundings. Roofs on each facility in the complex are thatched, and wall treatments display a variety of African striped patterns. Patio umbrellas complete the immersion with a fun zebra striping.

Attention to detail was carried to the interiors of the facilities as well. The food service line is painted with a fun African pattern, and warm matching colors are used on the walls. Don't forget a banding pattern along the edge of the menu boards as well!

The attached indoor dining room completes the experience, with attractive wood and bamboo finishes on furniture, lighting sconces in the shape of spears, additional African patterns painted on the walls, and a recessed lighting package that adds subtlety to the fun, relaxed atmosphere.

El Paso Zoo - "Before"

Renovations at facilities around the country have provided literally dozens of "before and after" samples of distinctly improved facilities. Improvements are not just limited to exterior finishes. Improvements that are many times out of sight include re-configurations of service equipment, proprietary equipment additions, and ergonomic improvements.

El Paso Zoo - "After" The Armadillo Oasis

This re-designed snack location at the El Paso Zoo was transformed into the "Armadillo Oasis" Ice Cream Shop. The new facility blends perfectly with the Zoo surroundings and Paraje exhibit, and offers more efficient service for Zoo guests.
