Retail

Our merchandising philosophy is to offer a widely varied selection of natural, educational, and wildlife-related products that support the mission objectives of our cultural attraction partners, and inspire our guests!  Our ability to source the greatest selection of “mission match” merchandise in our retail operations sets us apart from our competitors.  For example, wildlife related products present animals only as they would appear in their natural habitat. This standard applies to not only the general classifications like stuffed animals, but also to the titles of books, the images on posters and greeting cards, any print or design used on a garment or accessory, and any gift-ware items.

Our retail environments are exciting to browse, with stimulating educational material, attractive home furnishings, popular logo’d apparel and souvenirs, and fashion accessories.

Unlike other national retail operators, we do not practice “centralized purchasing,” which ultimately removes our individual attraction partners from the buying decisions.  The merchandise offered in each attraction gift shop is extensively unique, and carries the stamp of approval from our partners. A constant market search for new and interesting products enables us to introduce more innovative merchandise that a visitor may not be expecting to see in a typical “souvenir” shop. A breath of freshness and an effort not to stagnate on the stereotypical souvenir items stimulates the visitor’s likelihood to make purchases.

Testimonials

SSA has provided the financial returns to us that they promised, have been very responsive to our input about product, and have been cooperative and collaborative. They have improved the infrastructure and physical look and feel of our stores, and have clearly been willing to make the kinds of investments required to succeed. We view this as a very good partnership and are pleased with our choice of SSA to run our retail operations. — Jim Hekkers, Executive Vice President - Monterey Bay Aquarium
